What Is a Surah?
A surah is a chapter of the Quran — the text is divided into 114 surahs of varying length, each made up of individual ayahs (verses).
Varying length
Surahs range enormously in length, from Surah Al-Kawthar (just three short ayahs) to Surah Al-Baqarah (286 ayahs, the longest in the Quran).
Not arranged chronologically
Surahs are generally arranged roughly by length (longer ones earlier, shorter ones later) rather than in the order they were revealed — a distinct organizing principle from most other religious texts.
Each has a name
Every surah has a traditional name, usually drawn from a distinctive word or theme within it — Surah Al-Baqarah ('The Cow'), Surah Yusuf ('Joseph'), and so on.
Do surahs have titles that describe their entire content?
Not necessarily — a surah's name is often taken from a single notable word or story within it, not a full summary of everything the chapter covers.
